Where we Started

Mixed martial arts rose to prominence in the 1990s, and by 2000 the “no holds barred” revolution had shattered the time-honored techniques and training methods of traditional martial arts.

Richmond All Martial Arts Club (RAMAC) was a product of this environment.  Practitioners of various martial arts gathered in public space on the downtown campus of J. Sargent Reynolds Community College where they sparred and shared techniques.  When interest in RAMAC faded a new group was formed under the name Martial Arts Mysticism and Occult Group (MAMOG) which met outdoors in Richmond’s Bryan Park.

In 2008, drawing on experiences in RAMAC and MAMOG, as well on extensive experience in Korean Karate, Savate, Shootfighting, Boxing and Wrestling, Robert Mitchell Jr. left MAMOG and founded Cabal Fang.  MAMOG quickly dissolved.  Cabal Fang survived.

We've been meeting outdoors year round since 2009 at West End Manor Civic Association in Richmond, Virginia.

The original temple on the Mitchell family property is still used for private meetings and the initiation of elders.

Fundraising efforts for the construction of a larger temple are ongoing.

what are temple martial arts?

The first and oldest temple martial art in the world may be Shaolin Kung Fu, but the first and oldest temple martial art outside the orient is Cabal Fang.

Cabal Fang is a unique, eclectic and transformative fusion of traditional martial arts, mixed martial arts, self-defense concepts, and the ageless wisdom of Hermetic Philosophy and the Western Mystery Tradition.

Hermeticism teaches that there are certain concepts and ideas that are universally true and therefore found in all of the world's spiritual traditions, and those ideas are best accessed using myth and symbol.  Those myths and symbols form the spiritual center of Cabal Fang.

Without a spiritual center, martial arts are at risk of becoming nothing more than blood cults -- dark arts that put pain and punishment on a pedestal.  Conventional weapons come with safety instructions and are kept locked and secured.  The same is true of Cabal Fang.

Its temple is its lock and key and its spiritual traditions, initiations, and philosophy are its safety instructions.

Cabal Fang is called “Full Context Martial Arts” and it’s a study in contradictions.  It has to be.  Because a martial art must contain sincere contact, fighting realism and real fitness in order to be effective.  Yet it must also involve the work of the spirit.

Robert Mitchell, Founder and first elder of Cabal Fang

Robert “Mitch” Mitchell has been practicing martial arts since 1986.  From 1990 until 2000 he held a number of teaching posts, including Taekwondo instructor for the YMCA and City of Richmond Recreation and Parks, and combatives instructor for private security firms.  In 2010 he was awarded the rank of Master by the Combat Martial Arts Practitioner’s Association. in 2010.

He is also an interfaith minister ordained by Esoteric Interfaith Church, Inc.  Pastor Mitchell has spent his adult life studying and  practicing many religions – several denominations of Christianity, Taoism, Buddhism, Shamanism,  Wicca, and so on.
